Title of Dr. Jackson’s Presentation: Science Going Global in the International Year of Chemistry

Abstract: The year 2011 has been officially declared the International Year of Chemistry (IYC) by the United Nations, which has led to many celebrations and wonderful activities. IYC is also an opportunity to discuss and learn about the many ways the growing globalization of chemistry and science in general will affect science and manufacturing in the United States. The opportunities and challenges that globalization brings to the chemical enterprise will be addressed.

About Dr. Jackson: Current ACS President Dr. Nancy Jackson is the manager of the international chemical threat reduction department in the Global Security Center at Sandia National Laboratories. With the U.S. Department of State, Dr. Jackson developed the Chemical Security Engagement Program, an international program to raise awareness about chemical safety and security among chemical professionals, and to enable the practice of safety and security in the research, teaching, and commerce of chemicals. She has a B.S. degree in chemistry from George Washington University and a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Jackson is a national affiliate of the National Academies, where she has served on several boards and chaired studies. She is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and was recipient of the 2005 American Indian Science and Engineering Society Professional of the Year award.
